In 1588 one of the Spanish Armada Ships floundered off the coast at Spanish Point. Many were drowned but over 170 survivors made it to shore. However they were greeted by a less than friendly High Sheriff, who executed the survivors.
Today, on the sea front stands a huge carved stone, representing a galleon and its inscription in three languages commemorates a conciliatory visit by the King and Queen of Spain in the 1980's.
